Hedge Laying Traineeship
Are you aged 18-30? Are you practical and enjoy working outdoors?
In partnership with the National Lottery Heritage Fund and professional hedge layers from across England we’re running 5-month traineeships in the traditional craft of hedge laying. The traineeships may also include hedge planting and coppice management depending on location. The position is designed for someone who has a genuine interest in a career in hedge laying, with some outdoor practical working experience.
Main responsibilities and tasks:
Working in small, friendly team and receiving full training and getting plenty of experience.
- To learn and support the undertaking of commercial hedge laying: prep work, laying cuts, staking and binding.
- To learn heritage skills and promote their benefits.
- To learn to assess a hedge and its suitability to be laid.
- You will be required to ensure any tools you are using are kept safe and maintained regularly.
- To complete a portfolio or workbook. This will provide a record of work carried out and consolidate on-the-job learning.
- Additionally, some hedge planting jobs/coppice management dependant on traineeship location.

Assistant Hedgerow Project Officer
Are you passionate about nature, community, and making a real difference to the countryside? Join CPRE Hampshire, as we deliver the final phase of our flagship Hampshire Hedge Project!
We’re looking for an enthusiastic and organised Assistant Hedgerow Project Officer to help bring this ambitious project to life. You’ll be at the heart of our efforts to connect the South Downs and New Forest National Parks with a network of hedgerows to support biodiversity and tackle climate change.
Main responsibilities and tasks:
To work alongside the Hedgerow Project Officer on project elements such as:
- Organise and run hedge planting volunteer days and hedge laying training days
- Liaising with landowners and with key stakeholders
- Recruit and manage volunteers e.g. attend volunteer fairs
- Process applications for community grants (Community Hedge Fund)
- Organise events
- Reach out to schools, organise visits
- Teach classes at schools, scouts about hedgerows
- Run hedge planting sessions with primary and secondary schools
- Organise, host and give talks (online and in person)
- Social media, article writing, updating website
- Design leaflets/interpretation boards
