Learning the Art of Hedgelaying – My Day with CPRE Hampshire

Hi, I’m Olly, a second year student at Sparsholt University, currently doing my work placement with CPRE Hampshire.

Recently, I had the chance to take part in a hedge laying course alongside a group of volunteers, and it turned out to be one of the most hands-on and rewarding experiences I’ve had so far.

The course was led by Phil J. Hart, a true expert in the field and chairman of the South of England Hedgelaying Society. His demonstration was impressive and incredibly informative. He showed us how hedge laying transforms an ordinary hedge into a stockproof barrier while keeping it dense and healthy. By partially cutting the stems and bending them over, the hedge is encouraged to regrow vigorously from its base, creating a living fence that’s both functional and beautiful.

For many of the volunteers, this was their first time doing any kind of practical countryside work, so Phil’s tool talk was a great way to start. He explained how to use traditional tools like billhooks and axes and how to maintain them properly. I learned that a well-kept tool can make all the difference, cutting cleanly through stems and keeping the work flowing smoothly.

Some of the volunteers had tried hedge laying before and were keen to build on their skills. It was great to see how Phil tailored his guidance to each person, offering tips and feedback as we worked. As a student, having that kind of expert oversight was invaluable. I got to lay sections of hedge myself, knowing I had someone experienced nearby to help me improve.

Together, we laid a 30-metre stretch of mixed-species hedge, including hawthorn, ash, blackthorn and rose. It was hard work, but incredibly satisfying to see the transformation take shape. The hedge looked fantastic by the end – neat, strong and ready to thrive.

What I loved most was the sense of community and shared learning. Everyone was there to gain something new and the atmosphere was supportive and enthusiastic. CPRE Hampshire made it all possible, and I’m really grateful to be part of their team during my placement.

Hopefully, some of the volunteers will return for the upcoming Hedgerow Competition, where people will put their new skills to the test and see who can lay the best section of hedge. Let the best hedge win!

Alongside Olly, we were delighted to welcome Dan, a second-year student studying Ecology and Conservation at University Centre Sparsholt, who joined us for his work placement with CPRE Hampshire. Read on to hear Dan’s reflections on Hedgefest and what he learned from the experience.
