Earlier this month CPRE Hampshire were delighted to be joined by the Brockenhurst Young Farmers to learn about the importance and benefits of hedge-laying. Natalie Hargreaves, Hedgerow Heroes Co-ordinator, tells us more.
As part of CPRE Hampshire’s hedgerow project and engagement with the local community, over 20 young people joined from across the New Forest to hear about the wide-ranging benefits of hedge-laying and the work CPRE Hampshire have been doing across the estate.

Giving an overview of the country craft and practical demonstration, Chris Sparkes, CPRE Hampshire hedge-layer, shared his wealth of knowledge and experience of hedge-laying and why we should all be looking after our hedgerows.

Samantha Gates, Chair of Brockenhurst Young Farmers said ‘Brockenhurst Young Farmers had a great evening learning about hedge-laying. We all learned why hedge laying is so important and the benefits it has to the land and wildlife. Not only did the members learn, the parents did too, and are very interested in starting their hedge-laying journey!’

We were delighted to be able to talk to so many young people about the enormous benefits of hedge-laying and hope that as future farmers, they will continue to realise the value of our humble hedgerow and grow strong, healthy hedges’.
