Magnificent Meadows Flourish Thanks to Volunteers

6th August 2025

Following a successful pilot last year, the Hampshire Magnificent Meadows project has returned for its second season and it’s already proving to be another fantastic chapter in our journey to protect and restore precious grassland habitats.

Thanks to a brilliant team of dedicated and talented volunteers, our meadows are thriving once more. Our Magnificent Meadow volunteers are not only helping us conserve vital landscapes, but they’re also breathing life into traditional countryside skills that are increasingly rare – and increasingly needed.

Scything at Cowslip Meadow

One of the recent highlights has been the incredible effort at Cowslip Meadow, where volunteers took up traditional scythes to cut the grassland by hand. Learn more about making hay by hand.

In total, they created 47 bales of hay, all manually gathered and stacked. These hand-made hay bales are now being used to supplement feed for local livestock, which is particularly critical this year due to the exceptionally dry spring and early summer. The meadows aren’t just supporting wildlife – they’re helping to sustain our rural farming community, too.

We we’re also joined by BBC South Today:

A Habitat for Pollinators

Looking ahead, our volunteers will be taking part in the UK Pollinator Monitoring Scheme, helping us better understand the insects that call these meadows home. With pollinators under increasing pressure, this data will be invaluable in shaping how we manage and protect these sites in the future.

The work doesn’t stop at Cowslip Meadow either — more scything sessions are planned across other meadow sites in Hampshire, continuing our efforts to create healthy, diverse habitats that benefit plants, pollinators, and people alike.

Thank You to Our Volunteers

We simply couldn’t do this without our volunteers. Their passion, energy, and willingness to get stuck in – often under the summer sun – is what makes this project so special. Whether it’s wielding a scythe, stacking hay, or counting bees and butterflies, they are making a real, tangible difference.

As we move through the second year of Hampshire Magnificent Meadows, it’s clearer than ever: when people come together to care for the land, truly magnificent things can grow.
