The Seeds of Success: Steve’s story

Our hedgerow traineeship programme is designed to bring new perspectives and ideas to the conservation sector whilst helping to secure the future sustainability of hedgerow management practices.

Steve’s story

Steve, at the age of 41, found himself at a crossroads in his career. Tired of the monotony of his desk job as a graphic designer for over two decades, he yearned for a change. It was then that he discovered an opportunity with CPRE Hampshire that would alter the course of his professional life.

With a keen interest in woodland management, Steve decided to embark on a new journey by enrolling in CPRE Hampshire’s traineeship program. Despite his initial reservations and doubts about his ability to excel in hedge laying, Steve was determined to step out of his comfort zone and embrace the challenge.

With the unwavering support from CPRE Hampshire and daily guidance provided by from his mentor at Hedgelife, Steve gradually honed his skills and mastered the art of hedge laying. Overcoming his initial scepticism, he successfully completed the entire hedge-laying process with finesse. Not stopping there, Steve also obtained his Chainsaw Cross-Cutting and Maintenance qualification, further enhancing his expertise in the field.

The future

Steve’s hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed, as he recently secured a coveted position at HedgeLife, marking a significant milestone in his career change. As he eagerly anticipates the upcoming season, Steve is filled with a sense of fulfilment and excitement for the new opportunities that lie ahead in his flourishing hedge laying career.

Steve is one of two individuals that have transitioned into full-time careers in hedgerow management following their traineeship with us. This achievement demonstrates the effectiveness of our pathway in preparing aspiring conservationists with the practical skills and knowledge needed to excel in the field of hedgerow preservation. 

About our hedgerow traineeships

Our five-month hedge-laying traineeships give young people from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to learn the ancient craft of hedge-laying under the guidance of experienced professionals.

The structured, practical pathway provides participants with hands-on training in

• hedge planting
• coppice management

The traineeship is designed to support anyone who wishes to start their hedge-laying journey so that they have the necessary skills and experience to step into a viable and rewarding career.
