CPRE Hampshire Launches Paid Hedge Laying Traineeships to Inspire the Next Generation of Countryside Stewards
CPRE Hampshire, in partnership with the National Lottery Heritage Fund and professional hedge layers from across England, is proud to announce the launch of its 2025/26 Hedge Laying Traineeship Programme – a unique, paid opportunity for young people to gain hands-on experience in the traditional countryside craft of hedge laying.
Running from 3rd November 2025 to 31st March 2026, the five-month traineeship is designed for individuals aged 18–30 (flexible) who are passionate about wildlife conservation, heritage skills, and outdoor work. With placements available in Hampshire, Essex, Surrey, and Somerset, the programme offers a structured pathway into a rewarding rural career.
Trainees will receive:
- Training in hedge laying, hedge planting, and coppice management (location dependent)
- Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-cutting qualification (NPTC/LANTRA)
- Bronze Level 1 Hedge Laying accreditation (LANTRA)
- Forestry First Aidand BASIS Hedgerow Management training
- Entry into a hedge laying competition to showcase their skills
Trainees will work in small, supportive teams and gain real-world experience alongside professional hedge layers. The goal is to equip participants with the skills and confidence to pursue a career in hedge laying.
Locations & Hours:
- Stockbridge, Hampshire – Part-time (15–22.5 hrs/week)
- Abbess Roding, Essex – Full/Part-time (22.5–37.5 hrs/week)
- Norbury Park, Surrey – Full-time (37.5 hrs/week)
- Chew Magna, Somerset – Full-time (37.5 hrs/week)
Trainees will be paid the National Living Wage (£12.21/hr) and must be able to travel to their designated work location.
