An awards scheme run throughout Hampshire is urging more entries from schools and community groups in the south of the county. The Campaign to Protect Rural England's annual scheme looks to reward outstanding and enterprising projects that support its goal of "standing up for the countryside". The deadline for entry is 15th July 2011.
Winners from previous years have included North Baddesley Junior School near Southampton for its 'Real Earth Force' environmental programme. Susan Smith, Headteacher said:
"We are delighted to receive an award for work that is well established and sustainable. It is a fantastic thing to see all the children busy in the open air, caring for their environment and learning skills for their future as adults where issues such as global warming and sustainability of resources are becoming increasingly more and more of a concern."
For 2011 CPRE Hampshire is proud to have the Awards sponsored by Steve's Leaves. Steve's Leaves are a bunch of pioneering farmers who grow tasty, nutritious baby leaves using nature friendly farming and building special habitats to encourage wildlife. CPRE members are supportive of healthy, local foods, as well as educating children about where their food comes from.
Becky French from CPRE Hampshire, who runs the awards scheme, said:
"Schools who are working to educate children on the value of the countryside, nature, and the creatures who inhabit our green spaces need all the support that we can give them to highlight their good work. We'd love to hear about successful programmes that introduce children to the environment, and encourage them to learn about their responsibilities.
