Protecting the wildlife of Fleet Pond
As part of its educational 'Walks and Talks programme', the Campaign to Protect Rural England (Hampshire) has organised a guided tour of the Fleet Pond Nature Reserve, in Fleet on Tuesday 9th September, at 10.30am. Guided by the Chairman of the Fleet Pond Society and CPRE member Colin Gray, the tour will look around the site and learn about the management work employed to enhance its value for a wide diversity of wildlife. On the tour you will see heathland plants and some of the wetland habitat, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The oldest section of Fleet Pond's woodlands has good specimens of Oak and Scots Pine. A popular spot is Sandy Bay, with informal seats and great views. The conservation work is designed to conserve and enhance the reserve for as wide a diversity of wildlife as possible. Animal diseases permitting, you should be able to approach the grazing animals, Shetland Ponies and cattle - which now include two Belted Galloways. On the pond there are swans, geese, numerous ducks, great crested grebes, herons and cormorants amongst other wildlife. Becky French of CPRE, who is helping to organise the visit said: "The Fleet Pond Society work really hard to maintain and enhance the reserve for the benefit of both wildlife and the community. Please come with us, learn more about their work and see the wildlife and beautiful surroundings for yourself." These events are very popular, so please return your application form as soon as possible, to avoid disappointment. There will be a charge of £4 for members and £6 for non members. For all enquiries please contact Becky French: info@cprehampshire.org.uk or alternatively on 01962 843655. - Ends - CPRE/H/148 The Campaign to Protect Rural England, Hampshire Branch (CPRE Hampshire) is a registered charity and a branch of the national CPRE charity.
