North Hampshire District Group (Autumn 2008)

We have been actively involved in trying to prevent large warehouse development at New Greenham Park, near Newbury, which would put extra traffic onto the over-loaded A339, Newbury to Basingstoke road. There will be an appeal hearing soon.

We have supported Cliddesden residents in their fight against overexpansion of the scrap yard in their village, the noise from which disturbs their lives. The local council has issued an Enforcement Notice and the County Council has refused a planning application, but the scrap yard operator has appealed.

Currently, we are objecting to the Government's changes to the South East Plan which require Basingstoke to build even more houses, against the wishes of the Borough Council.

In June we arranged for our members to visit two beautiful gardens not normally open to the public. Some 40 members enjoyed the visits and we are grateful to the owners and to their gardeners who showed us round.

Our annual Autumn Supper is on 18th November at St. Mary Bourne with Bob Broadbent giving a talk on 'Local Chalk Streams and Fishing'. To apply for tickets, phone Jack Castle (01635 25353) or contact Pam Mason at the Winchester office.
