New Forest and Southampton District Group (Autumn 2008)
The release of the New Forest National Park Plan Consultation Draft has provoked passionate reactions from local residents. As we go to press CPRE Hampshire is analysing and commenting and will forward their response to the National Park by the closing deadline. The Plan is designed to be a pro-New Forest, proconservation document that is dedicated to protecting and sustaining the traditional character of the Park. CPRE sees the overall thrust of the Plan as positive. This is not to say we will support the Plan in its entirety. We shall be constructive in our approach to protecting what is valued in the countryside and in particular the very special landscape character of the NFNP. Outside the Park there is still controversy about the replacement ferries on the Lymington – Yarmouth route – hotly contested by river users and environmentalists because of their increased size and displacement. They are currently undergoing their sea trials, but Wightlink have not yet received permission for the work needed to adapt their terminal at Lymington, and the need for a more rigorous impact assessment has now been raised to ministerial level.
