Everyone's a Winner at The Countryside Awards 2018

Congratulations go to the winners of the Hampshire Countryside Awards, announced last night at a special ceremony near Winchester.

Different groups and projects from throughout the county, all of whom are working towards improving the countryside, made the Finalist shortlist and were invited to attend. The Finalists got to showcase their work and build links with other similar projects within Hampshire. The evening ended with the awards presentation to the five lucky Winners.

Each were presented with a commemorative plaque from the Sponsors and Judges for each category.

The Winners were:

Community and Voluntary- Sponsored by Southern Co-op: Petersfield Society’s Community Tree Project

Young People – Sponsored by Forest Holidays: Oasis Down to Earth Farm

Rural Enterprise – Sponsored by Hildon Natural Mineral Water: Beechcroft Farm

Making Places – Sponsored by Hastoe Housing: Hillier’s Haven, Winchester City Council

Sparsholt Village Post-Office and Shop received Special Recognition for their contribution to the countryside.

New for this year, at the event organised by the countryside charity, CPRE Hampshire, was the Hampshire’s Choice Award. This gave the public the chance to vote for their favourite project out of the list of Finalists, to win £500 towards their project.

CPRE Hampshire Chief Executive Charlee Bennett said: ‘We were amazed with the response that saw over 2000 votes being cast. We are delighted to announce that Winchester Youth Counselling were the well-deserved winners who will receive £500 towards their brilliant work providing free Nature Therapy sessions for young people, helping to improve their emotional health and wellbeing.’

Some of the young people attended on the night and were there to receive the big cheque with representatives from Winchester Youth Counselling and their project partners from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.

Jill Guppy from Winchester Youth Counselling said: ‘We are delighted to have won this award. It means so much to us and the young people we work with. It gave them a real boost of confidence to attend the ceremony and win this award, they felt so proud of themselves. We will be talking to our young people to see what they think this money should be spent on as part of the Nature Therapy service, be that different equipment or more sessions. Together with our partners from the Wildlife Trust, we were really chuffed and can’t thank CPRE Hampshire and the sponsors enough for this great award’.

As well as our finalists, sponsors and volunteers, special guests on the night included HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Nigel Atkinson Esq. the President of CPRE Hampshire, The Earl of Malmesbury, Cllr Frank Pearson, Mayor Elect of Winchester and Cllr Ian Carr, Mayor Elect of Test Valley.

Dee Haas, Chair of CPRE Hampshire said, ‘It was a wonderful evening and to us, really all the Finalists were winners. The range of work being done throughout the county to support and celebrate the Hampshire Countryside is amazing and we are delighted to be able to share this evening with so many inspirational and devoted projects. Thank you to all our Sponsors and everyone involved for making this such a special evening.’

CPRE Hampshire have been holding the Countryside Awards for over 11 years to celebrate a beautiful, thriving countryside and all those who sustain it.
