South Downs & Central

South Downs & Central

Autumn/Winter 2018

Latest update from our district group covering the South Downs and Central area. This update was produced for our twice yearly newsletter, Hampshire Views. Please check the rest of the News section of the website for more recent updates.

Our district group covers the areas of East Hampshire District and Winchester District, including the Hampshire part of the South Downs National Park.

Within South Downs & Central Group we are pleased with the new South Downs National Park Local Plan. This is landscape led and strong on protecting ecosystem services, tranquillity and dark skies - all CPRE "asks" which we have campaigned for.

The big challenge for the coming year will be protecting the countryside within the current Reviews of the Winchester and East Hampshire Local Plans. These will have to find room for yet higher housing numbers. We will be campaigning for more and better use of land which is already developed or not being used efficiently, using higher densities where appropriate. Also for more affordable housing in rural areas and, following the national park, strong policies on landscape, ecosystem services, tranquillity and dark skies.

We will also be doing our best to prevent the construction of a huge building, 22 metres high, within the East Hampshire countryside to contain machinery to convert electricity imported from France to a suitable supply for the national grid; and to prevent allocation for housing of a large site in the open countryside to the west of Winchester.
