Did You Know?
Don Stewart, Planning Group
  • By putting an aluminium drink can in the wheelie-bin as rubbish you are throwing away the energy equivalent to a gallon of petrol.
  • Four out of every five drinks cans world-wide are entirely made of aluminium.
  • Aluminium Recycling Plants only cost about 10% of the price of a primary ore smelter and yields metal with only 5% of the energy input - a 95% energy saving!
  • Aluminium fetches a much higher scrap price than steel.
  • Do not cook acidic foods in aluminium pans.
  • Foil represents nearly 40% of the UK usage of aluminium in packaging.

  • Aerosol cans are impossible to recycle and a wasteful form of packaging.
  • Buy hair preparations in a pump action plastic spray, deodorants as a roll-on or stick, and household polishes and waxes in tins.

  • Waste lubricating oil from vehicles is recyclable.
  • "Oil never wears out, it just gets dirty".
  • Never dump oil down the drain ... If it reaches a sewage treatment plant the bacteria needed for effective treatment is killed.

  • One-third of all domestic rubbish is packaging.
  • The per capita consumption of paper in the UK exceeds 163 kg per year.
  • UK imports two-thirds of its paper needs.
