As we are increasingly aware, water in the South of England is becoming a precious resource we must not waste. But we are wasteful in other respects, too. Each person in our area generates around half a tonne of waste per year, of which only 20% is recycled. The articles in this section highlights CPRE Hampshire's policies and involvement in creating a more sustainable countryside.

Water

  • A Water Resource Strategy for the South East of England. (PDF file: 2.85Mb). A comprehensive 65 page report published by CPRE SE Region and written by hydrologist Graham Warren. It suggests that the region could be short of one billion litres of drinkable water a day if we don't change our approach to water resources. See also the press release.

  • Water, Water - Flood or Drought?. Ed Dawson highlights how existing policies could lead to both flood and drought at the same time, with increased housing exacerbating the situation. He outlines steps for promoting a more rational and sustainable approach to water resources (April 2006).

Energy

  • Statement on Renewable Energy in National parks. Following a proposal to build two giant wind turbines in the South Downs National Park at Wether Down, CPRE Hampshire have written to the applicant (Volkswind) to express their concerns and request that their proposal be withdrawn.
See also 2-page summary (PDF) - detailed critique (PDF) - Campaign Flier (PDF 3.6Mb). There is also a local campaign group Stop East Meon Wind Farm (external link).

  • Renewable Energy. CPRE supports the use of renewable energy, but not at the expense of the character, beauty or tranquillity of rural landscapes. A major concern is the promotion of large scale wind farms which is not likely to be either sustainable or acceptable (Nov 2004).

  • CPRE National Energy Campaign. How to to tackle climate change whilst generating the energy we need, and do so in a way that protects our countryside as much as possible.

  • CPRE's Policy on Onshore Wind Turbines (PDF document). CPRE believes they have a role but that their location and extent need to be carefully controlled because of several potential impacts on the countryside.

Waste

  • Energy Recovery. Report on a visit to Integra South East Energy Recovery Facility at Portsmouth. Read about the challenges of tackling waste and the use of recycling, energy recovery, and - as a last resort - landfill.

  • Illegal Flytipping. Waste in the wrong place! CPRE Hampshire's campaign to combat the problem.

  • Waste Disposal. Dealing with asbestos; also a list of general dump sites in Hampshire.

  • Did You Know?. Waste and recycling snippets.

  • Are We Making The Most Of Our Waste?. "Not yet.." says Don Stewart, describing Hampshire's material and energy recovery facilities (Nov 2006).

  • Visit Report. Report on a CPRE Hampshire visit to the recovery facilities at Alton and Chineham in May 2006.

  • CPRE's National Policy on Waste (PDF document). Landfill sites cause many problems. CPRE's approach is based on a 3-level waste hierarchy of 1) minimisation; 2) re-use and recycling; and 3) disposal by incineration and landfill.
