National Fly-Tipping Prevention Group
by Becky French
Latest government statistics indicate that fly-tipping is on the increase with local authorities in England dealing with more than 2.6 million incidents of fly-tipping in 2006/2007 on public land alone! If flytipping incidents on private land were included this figure could almost double. CPRE has joined and is active on the National Fly Tipping Prevention Group (NFTPG) a group of organisations working with a common aim: coming up with solutions to the problem of fly-tipping. Their publication Tackling Fly-tipping: a guide for landowners and managers, includes information about legislation and case studies. For further information please visit http://www.environmentagency.gov.uk/nftpg/. CPRE Hampshire has itself recognised the general misunderstandings concerning the legalities of fly-tipping in the Hampshire community, by producing our own Fly-tipping leaflet. The guide, titled: A guide for farmers and landowners gives you all the general information concerning flytipping in Hampshire. You can obtain a free brochure by sending a stamped addressed envelope to Branch Office with your request. Alternatively it can be viewed on our website.(see link top right) Last year CPRE Hampshire joined other NGO's to form a Hampshire litter campaign group. Made up of representatives from the Committee for Rural Hampshire (CRH), Country Land Association (CLA), NFU, WI and local parishes- the group aims to improve the litter and fly-tipping situation in Hampshire. Ideas include education in schools, localized action groups and the trialing of new technology to report and catalogue cases of Fly-tipping. Following extensive meetings, the group has joined a Local Action Group (LAG) seeking European Leader Funding for the area. If successful the group will be part of an extensive rural programme designed to improve rural economy issues-with an overall budget of £1,700,000 to be spent in 6 years! We are currently awaiting the results of the LAG's application to see if European funding has been successful. April 2008 This page updated 17th April 2008 |
