We have paid special attention to Southern Water's proposals to meet locally the projected national increase in water demand of 5% by 2020.

In Hampshire this increase may well be higher as government housing targets have to be met. Metering and reduction in leakage will supply some of this.

One long term strategy to meet even higher demands in the future (to 2040) concerns two of our iconic chalk streams:

  • The River Itchen can no longer supply as much water as it did, it now has protection. If it goes below a certain flow then more water will be taken instead from the River Test from near Testwood Lakes. This will be piped overland to the Otterbourne Water Treatment Works.

  • The Environment Agency are having detailed talks with Southern Water to reduce the effect this abstraction will have on the Lower Test and on the upstream river as many fish move between the lower and upper reaches. We are keeping a watching brief on this proposal.

We are also watching on the matter of supplying extra water to the Itchen from the Candover stream with its nationally important fauna.
