Visit the Opera and Raise Funds for CPRE
For this year's annual fundraising event we are holding a 'Glyndebourne style' opera (optional black tie) in the wonderful setting of Bedales School at Steep, near Petersfield. We have hired the professional standard theatre for the performance and have the school grounds for the day. We have the school grounds for the day and so plan to offer attendees a glass of bubbly on arrival and then the chance to attend a first class opera whilst enjoying their own picnic in the grounds during the interval.
Please note, if it rains on the day picnicking and welcome drinks can be accommodated under covered areas within the school grounds.
The Magic Flute
On Sunday July 11th 2011, Oyster Opera will perform The Magic Flute in English translation by Stephen Fry, at Bedales School, Steep, in aid of CPRE.
Mozart's last opera, The Magic Flute, first performed in 1791, is essentially a fairy-tale opera - a sublime blending of the serious and comic. Set in Egypt - a magic land of handsome princes, demonic queens, evil abductors, serpents and the supernatural - we observe a beguiling story of lovers in jeopardy, as transparent as any pantomime.
The Magic Flute offers a combination of ritual, magic and symbolism, interspersed with circus-like clowning which borders on the farcical, put across with a hugely entertaining mix of popular tunes, high-art arias and belcanto-like display - a fabulous new production designed by Jessie Giraud, with costumes designed by Loz Buzzard.
OYSTER OPERA is renowned for their visually arresting, theatrical productions. They are excited to have Clive Bebee on board as Director - a dynamic, fresh energy in the world of opera.
The Magic Flute has a lot of dialogue and Oyster Opera will be working with a new translation written by the well known Stephen Fry. It will be a treat to hear the story and all the humour delivered in Fry's clear, witty translation. A fantastical, period production performed in English with piano, Oyster Opera's Magic Flute promises to be a delight for all the family. It will be an excellent introduction to opera, to those who have yet to be converted as well as a great evening's entertainment for the regular opera-goer.
Early booking is recommended!
