Death of John Venning

It is with great sadness that we write to tell you of the death of John Venning, chairman of the Campaign to Protect Rural England in Hampshire. John passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, 21st October during a holiday with his wife, Sybil, whilst on a coastal walk in Cornwall. He lived in Steep.

AGM Highlights (May 2009)

The 2009 AGM was held at Shawford Village Hall on 20th May. Chairman John Venning reviewed the year's successes and outstanding issues. He highlighted a new approach to volunteering - campaigning à la carte.

Ed Dawson, CPRE South East regional Director, described the outcome of the South East Plan and outlined the new structures now that the South East Regional Assembly has been abolished. His bottom line: the issues remain, whatever the structures.

Shaun Spiers, CPRE Chief Executive, outlined the new 2026 vision and how it was developed.

Hampshire Views - Issue 1 (Spring/Summer 2009)

Our new annual printed newsletter has been sent out to members. Packed full of information on our campaigns, updates from the district groups, plans for the future, and above all, how we are restructuring our volunteering so that poeple can volunteer à la carte specifically on campaigns that they are passionate about. CPRE's Christmas card - we need your help! (March 2009)

Following the great success of last year's Christmas card, we are now searching for photos for 2009.

Do you have any photos of a snowy village scene, any winter shots of landscape, famous landmarks, or Christmassy scenes?

If so, we'd love to see them!

If anyone has any photos that they think may be interesting for our 2009 Christmas card, then please send them to: info@cprehampshire.org.uk. We would very much appreciate your help. If your photograph is selected you will have the satisfaction of having your own Christmas card produced…. and you will also be helping to support the work of CPRE Hampshire.

Do You Have Unwanted Items?

CPRE Mid-Hampshire is taking part in two events. They will have a sale table at the Mayor's table-top sale on 29th March and they are running the Winchester car boot sale in Worthy Lane car park on Sunday 24th May. As well as providing stewards for the event, CPRE will also be running a table.

If you have any unwanted items, plants, toys, books etc. that you would be kind enough to donate; we would be very pleased to arrange collection.

CPRE Responds to New Forest National Park Draft Management Plan (November 2008)

CPRE Hampshire endorses the vision, but has concerns over several of the details. You can read the plan at the New Forest National Park website and the CPRE response here (PDF).

Bordon/Whitehill Eco-town (November 2008)

An Eco-town at Bordon/Whitehill has today taken a step forward on the path to becoming a reality. CPRE is monitoring the situation and wants to ensure that any development is designed and planned within a strict environmental framework in keeping with the needs of residents of Bordon/Whitehill and villages in the surrounding countryside. CPRE Responds to South East Plan Changes (October 2008)

CPRE South East has sent a full response on the latest proposed changes to the South East Draft Plan. It objects strongly to proposed changes in process, housing, lack of sustainability sub regional designation. See press release, Overview of response (PDF) or Full response (PDF - 86 pages).

New Christmas Card for 2008 Now on Sale (October 2008)

Our new Christmas card shows a seasonal image of St Nicholas Church Steventon taken by a CPRE member. Cards cost £4 for a pack of 10. See details.

Press Release on 2009 Awards Scheme (October 2008)

Although nominations for CPRE Hampshire's 2009 Awards Scheme have been open for acceptance since announcement of the 2008 Award Winners, a press release has gone out to increase awareness and to encourage eligble schemes to enter.

Where Have All the Flowers Gone? (October 2008)

This is the title of a new book from CPRE supporter Charles Flower. Charles is one of the country's top authorities on wild flowers and has both talked at CPRE meetings and hosted visits to his own wild flower farm, Carver's Hill Farm (see the press release about our 2007 visit). The book is described as "a beautiful but practical guide to bringing our gardens and the countryside back to life by re-introducing the wild flowers that used to provide food for birds, butterflies and other insects and were a constant delight to the human eye". Bill Bryson's Notes on A Dirty Island

CPRE President Bill Bryson reported for BBC's Panorama on 11th August. He highlighted the blight of litter and flytipping that is despoiling our countryside. Support CPRE's Stop The Drop campaign. See Litter Campaign

CPRE celebrates a significant victory in the campaign against BOATS.

Following an Appeal Court ruling, eighteen of the claims for new BOATs (Byways Open to All Traffic) in Hampshire which were previously exempt from the NERC Act legislation have now been rejected as invalid. Rosemary Horsey takes reader through the tortuous byways of this legislation (Aug 2008). Read full article.

Eco-Towns: Not So Eco

The Government plans a number of eco-towns, including a 5,500 home development at Bordon-Whitehill. CPRE fully supports the Government's aspirations for achieving the highest standards in terms of sustainability and affordability. However, far from being eco, many of the schemes are in remote or otherwise unsustainable locations. CPRE is assessing the various schemes to see how they match up to CPRE's ten tests for sustainability.

One Last Push for the South Downs Petition

John Venning of CPRE Hampshire is urging as many people as possible to sign the petition to include the Western Weald in the South Downs National Park. The target is 5,000 signature by 9th July.

CPRE Hampshire Announces Award Winners

CPRE Hampshire is proud to announce the first four winners of its Countryside and Design award, launched this year. They are:

Portway Junior School, in Andover, for their new school garden project in the Schools category
Bordon Junior School in East Hampshire, for their new school garden project- in the Schools category
Futurefarms Ltd of Martin in the New Forest, for their cooperative farm and food project - in the Voluntary/ Community category
Ballard Water Meadows, in New Milton, for their conservation work - in the Voluntary/ Community category.

Stop the Drop Anti-litter campaign launched 16th April

CPRE's President, Bill Bryson, launched this, CPRE's biggest 2008 campaign saying "Litter is becoming the default condition of the countryside. It is time that we – all of us – did something about this. The landscape is too lovely to trash."

CPRE Hampshire has been addressing the problems with fly-tipping since 2006, and is now fully behind the national campaign with local initiatives.

Walks and Talks Programme 2008

CPRE Hampshire's walks and talks programme is now underway. There are springtime guided walks in Old Portsmouth, Ampsfield, Queen Elizabeth Country Park. There are farm visits in June and July to two farms on the Wintershill estate and Lyburn Farm. Later visits include Silchester, Twyford waterworks, Fleet Pond Nature Reserve and Alton's Material Recovery Facility.

128,000 New Houses - Is This Sustainable?

The latest South East Plan report is recommending housing allocations for Hampshire that exceed 128,000 over the next 18 years. These numbers are 5 per cent higher than targets that were recommended in the EiP (Examination in Public) report, and could be raised even further by central government in future.

In response to this, two CPRE members have set up a website called www.savethesouth.org.uk, and they are asking for all those concerned with this issue to sign their Downing Street petition. Well over 1000 signatures are needed for this petition to make an impact, and to generate a response from the Prime Minister, so your contribution would be very much appreciated.

Bill Bryson visits areas to be excluded from the South Downs National Park

Bill Bryson, CPRE's president, on 11th September visited areas in the Western Weald which were recently recommended by the government's planning inspector to be excluded from the proposed national park.

South Downs Campaign Hots Up

A 'nonsensical boundary' is how John Venning describes the latest proposals for the South Downs National Park. See his recent article (July 2007) and CPRE's position statement.

Recently over 100 campaigners walked Harting Down to support the campaign to achieve the best possible South Downs National Park. Walkers included Brian Blessed, the actor and outgoing President of the Council for National Parks. Read about it and see the pictures. There is currently a further round of consultation (closes 13th August) on issues such as its boundaries.
