On 11th May 2006 CPRE launched 2026 - A Vision for the Countryside, an inspiring and optimistic vision for the future of the English countryside, our greatest national asset. CPRE Hampshire were pleased to have CPRE Chief Executive, Shaun Spiers talk about it at its 2009 AGM. It's key points are:

  • Change attitudes - not just economic growth but a new focus on quality of life, embracing beauty, local character and the enjoyment of green, open spaces; a more beautiful and varied landscape
  • Better planning - urban regeneration that helps to protect the countryside, an accessible green belt, democratic and sustainable planning at local level
  • New life in the countryside - where people walk and cycle more, there is affordable rural housing and children engage with the natural world
  • Food and farming - wild flowers, birds, insects and mammals have returned; farmers are valued, there is more local food and more countryside visits
  • Changing landscapes - woodlands, wildlife and wetlands; remote upland areas become wilder in character; there are thriving coastlines and darker skies
  • Green energy - we have adapated to climate change; rural buildings are more energy efficient and small-scale renewables are common.

The result of achieving this vision is a 'virtuous circle': As more people come to understand, visit and value the countryside, the countryside improves, people care for it more, it is further improved and valued.
